After growing up in Pennsylvania and the U.S. Virgin Islands, Robbie studied biology at SBCC and the College of Creative Studies at UCSB. He conducted undergraduate research in developmental biology, intending to pursue a graduate degree in that field, before becoming fascinated by microbiology. He earned his Master’s Degree from UCSB working on a novel virulence factor in Bordetella pertussis, the bacterial pathogen that causes pertussis, or “whooping cough.”

Ever since being a student at SBCC, Robbie knew he wanted to teach here. After teaching at other local colleges, he landed his dream job when he joined SBCC’s Biology Department in 2013. He teaches mostly Medical Microbiology, but has also taught courses in general biology, cell biology, human biology, and human heredity.
