Umoja

Umoja (a Kiswahili word meaning unity) is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of African American and other students. We believe that when the voices and histories of students are deliberately and intentionally recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success. Umoja actively serves and promotes student success for all students through a curriculum and pedagogy responsive to the legacy of the African and African American Diasporas.

Umoja at SBCC

Our umoja program offers supported english classes that are made to fully support students inside and outside of the classroom; each class features a tutor and supportive faculty who teach from an Afro-centric perspective and have extensive office hours to offer students multiple ways to stay engaged and succeed!  In addition to supported classrooms, our program also features a multitude of programs and events that are designed to further develop students academically, mentally, and professionally. Umoja students must regularly see their academic advisor, attend a minimum of 3 workshops, and 3 programs to be considered active in the Umoja program and receive full benefits. Students who fail to do so will not be removed from the program but will not be able to enjoy the full benefits we have to offer.

Village Space and More

Our village space is a place where our umoja community comes to spend time with one another, eat, study and build community! We offer snacks, quiet time for studying, community events and workshops. This is where our community becomes family.

Students can also receive a multitude of benefits from our Umoja program such as food vouchers, book grants, registration assistance, college tours, conference attendance and more!
