International student, Miriam, talks about her housing experiences and shares tips with you in this video

Housing in Santa Barbara has a low vacancy rate, so housing can be expensive. New international students may arrive up to 30 days before the program start date on their I-20.

1. It's never too early to begin your housing search. Start your search several months in advance! Many housing options fill by June.

2. Consider what type of housing is right for youThere are several options available, including homestays, student-centered & dorm style living with meal plans, shared apartments, or a house with roommates.

3. Think about what location and transportation options are best for you. Walking and biking distance to campus, bus access to campus, near the beaches or downtown, convenient access to campus or shopping, a quiet family atmosphere or locations where there are high concentrations of college students. Check out Which neighborhood is best for me? to view descriptions and maps of the various neighborhoods in the Santa Barbara area.

4. Plan your budget. Housing in Santa Barbara is expensive. The estimated International Student Budget provides a realistic amount you should expect to pay for rent, utilities, food, and other personal expenses. This Budget Worksheet can help you determine what you can afford.

5. A lease is a legal contract to rent property. Carefully read your lease before you sign and make sure you understand the terms of your lease. Here are some useful resources. Most housing options require a deposit and the first and last months' rent.
