Physics 123; mechanical
waves, heat, light, and modern physics, is for Engineering and Physical Science
students. It is the second or third
Calculus based Physics course and Physics 121 is the prerequisite. This course is very analytical.
Topics include mechanical waves, thermodynamic processes and systems,
kinetic theory, light and optics, and modern physics. The associated lab, physics 123L, is required
with this course. The intent of this
course is to introduce basic physical laws of thermodynamics, optics, and
modern physics; develop the language of thermodynamics, optics, and modern
physics; and acquire analytical skills.
The prerequisites are Physics 121 and Math 160. It is highly recommended that students also
enroll in Physics 123W. Physics 123W is
a supplementary problem-solving workshop designed to increase students success
in Calculus based Physics. (TR: CSU; UC

Grading: Grades are based on 3 examinations, homework,
laboratories, and the final exam. Grades
will be based on your percentage of the possible total point distribution with
some curving. Grades will be posted
online starting about midsemester. The
URL will be sent to your pipeline account about midsemester.

Homework guidelines: 1. Homework more than one day late will lose
three points (20%).
2.
Homework more
than 2 weeks late will not be accepted.
3.
Put your name,
class, and date in the upper right hand corner.
4.
Label chapter
number on the top line.
5.
Clearly number
the problems in the left margin, otherwise do not write in the margins .
6.
If homework
problems are not done in numerical order, please note.
7.
Staple multiple
pages together and write as legibly as possible.

Additional Help
Physics 123W
This
study class is highly recommended by the instructor. This problem-solving workshop class gives the
student time to do their Physics 123 homework with access to an instructor and
other students.
Tutors
The
department has FREE tutoring services available in the physics libary
(PS112). The hours for this FREE
tutoring service are determined the second week of classes and vary from
semester to semester (depending on funding).

Optional
Book
Schaums
outline series. This paperback is
excellent for the student seeking additional help. It is short and concise. Recommended by the instructor.

Videos
A
complete collection of the physics videos, "The Mechanical Universe",
is available in the learning center.
Viewing these videos is not required, but highly recommended since they
are very helpful and present the ideas in another setting. Some of the videos are beyond the scope of
this class, but all the videos are helpful.
