Ted Nash: The Sound of Art

As part of a two-week stay as a Santa Barbara Museum of Art artist in residence, Grammy Award-winning musician and composer Ted Nash shared insight and experience with a selection of Santa Barbara City College students and fellow musicians. In early September Mr. Nash walked the students through the creative process behind his album “Portrait in Seven Shades,” a suite consisting of seven movements, each inspired by a master of modern art who worked in the century around the apex of jazz: Chagall, Dali, Matisse, Monet, Picasso, Pollock and Van Gogh.

Mr. Nash has been working directly with the students, offering feedback and suggestions as the students compose new music for the 10-piece jazz ensemble.

You can hear the beautiful results of this novel composition process Oct. 9, at 2:30 p.m., on the front terrace of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art, 1130 State Street, Santa Barbara. For more information, visit the Santa Barbara Museum of Art website.

A second performance of selected works from this concert will be held the evening of Oct. 11 at SOhO Music Club, 1221 State Street, Suite 205 in Santa Barbara. The SOhO performance will also feature Ted Nash with the SBCC Lunch Break Big Band. For more information on this event, visit the SOhO Music Club website.
