Student Success Counseling and Student Success Plans
Student Success Counselors are available in the Academic Counseling Center by appointment and are here to help you achieve academic success. Student Success Counselors work with you personally to create a Student Success Plan to help you to overcome your obstacles and get back on track. The best time to meet individually with a Student Success Counselor is in September or early October. Students who wait until November to meet with a Student Success Counselor will be directed to a Student Success workshop to complete the Student Success Plan - Contact the Academic Counseling Center for details on how to sign up for a Student Success Workshop.
The Student Success Plan that you create with your Student Success Counselor will:
- Map out your goals
- Identify your greatest strengths and values
- Identify your motivation and how to increase it
- Identify your obstacles to student success and specific actions you can take to overcome them
- Identify important resources for student success
Let Student Success Counselors help you to get back on track and earn the success that you deserve.
Online Options to Complete the Student Success Plan
Students who are taking only online classes, or whose work schedule does not allow them to meet personally with a Student Success Counselor can contact Matt Lorenzen at lorenzen@sbcc.edu for information on how to complete an online option of the Student Success Plan.
Student Success Tips
- If you are on Academic Probation or Academic Disqualification and you know your current SBCC Cumulative G.P.A. and the number of units attempted (those with grades of A,B,C,D or F) you can go to the WSU GPA Calculator and enter the G.P.A. you desire to calculate the credits and grades you need to improve your current Grade Point Average (at least a 2.0). If you do not know this information you can get it by viewing your Transcript. The G.P.A. Calculator does not take into account coursework that you may plan to repeat. But the calculator will tell you how many units and what grade level you would need if you do not repeat courses in which you previously earned a "D" or "F"
- Meet with an Academic Counselor in the Counseling Center to develop or update your Student Educational Plan (S.E.P.). Be sure to identify courses where repeating makes sense.
- If you have already repeated classes in which you earned a "D" or "F" grade you need to submit a petition for use of Most Recent Grade in a Repeated Course. If you do not petition, the prior grade is still being included in your SBCC G.P.A. PD 100 – College Success. Almost everyone can use some help with test taking, study skills, time management, money management, relationship skills, self-esteem, goal setting and memory skills.
- A lack of direction and goals to which you are committed can be one reason why your past record has resulted in "D" "F", "W" or "No Pass" grades. A lack of direction and lack of goals is a major motivation sapper. Meet with a Career Counselor in the College's Career Advancement Center for assistance with selecting a major, identifying career options and setting meaningful life goals.
- Skills preparation is also a major cause of low grades. Knowing your English and math skill assessment levels is essential to selecting classes. Improving your English and math skills will almost always result in improvement in other courses if your reading, writing and/or math skill are holding you back. If you have not already done so enroll in and complete the English and math assessment offered through the college Assessment Center and enroll in English and math each semester until you earn eligibility for at least college level English and math. If you have completed assessment or know your assessment levels choose your classes based on appropriate skills advisories and/or pre-requisite that are listed under the course descriptions in the Schedule of Classes.
- Talk to your instructor as soon as you experience any difficulty. Find out how you can perform better on tests and papers. If you do not understand concepts say so and press your instructor for understanding. Take the time to visit your instructor during their office hours. Don't rely on catching them for few moments before or after class.
- Monitor your course progress and ask for feedback from your instructor. There may be times when you do need to withdraw from a course but getting feedback from your instructor early in the semester can be the key to earning a successful grade.
- Show up to class. Be on time. The number one common characteristic of students who earn "F" or "D", "W" or "No Pass" grades is that they missed more than two classes and/or were regularly late for class.
- Check out and use the services of the Learning Resources Center
- Avoid taking too many units particularly if you work more than 20 hours a week. Working too many hours is the number one reason students cite for getting unproductive grades. Consult with a Financial Aid Adviser to see if there are options to working so much while going to school.
- Avoid taking too many units in a semester in order to catch up in a hurry. If you have not been able to complete six or nine units with "C" or better grades your chances of earning "B"s and "A"s in 12 – 15 units in one semester are pretty slim. It is better to take 6 – 9 units and earn "B" and "A" grades than it is to take 12 units and earn only a "C" average. Once you master six to nine units with a "B" average then increase your course load by increments of three units a term as long as you can continue to earn higher than a 2.0 G.P.A.
- The life of a student trying to manage school, work, relationships, family and a personal life while remaining physically and psychologically healthy can be challenging. Traumatic or disruptive events can occur when we least expect them. If you need assistance check out the many confidential services available through the Health and Wellness Center. Consider reducing your alcohol intake. Your grades will suffer due to misuse of alcohol. Some students who have been placed on probation or disqualification report that living in or partying in Isla Vista was a major contributor to their poor academic performance. You may want to consider another living environment.
- You may be eligible for Academic Renewal to "disregard" up to two consecutive semesters of substandard (below 2.0) work completed at SBCC if at least two years have elapsed since completion of the most recent course work to be disregarded and you have accumulated 24 units with a 2.5 G.P.A., or 36 units with a 2.0 G.P.A. at SBCC and/or another college since the end of the semester(s) in which courses are to be disregarded. If you think you qualify contact an Academic Counselor for assistance in filing a petition for Academic Renewal.
- If you do stop attending a class prior to the last day to withdraw you must file a "drop from" with Admissions and records or run the risk of earning a permanent "F" . Do not count on your instructor to drop you if you stop attending.

Academic Renewal
Courses in which students have previously received substandard grades and which are inappropriate to the student's present educational objectives may be waived when a student-initiated petition has been approved by the Scholastic Standards Committee. A student may request academic renewal for not more than two consecutive semesters of substandard (below 2.0) work completed at SBCC. The student may choose to have either (1) all course-work taken in the terms disregarded in the computation of G.P.A.; or (2) select substandard (D or F) course work taken in the terms disregarded in the computation of G.P.A. At least two years must have elapsed since completion of the most recent course work to be disregarded. A student shall have accumulated 24 units with a 2.5 G.P.A., or 36 units with a 2.0 G.P.A. at SBCC and/or another college (transcripts required) since the end of the semester(s) in which courses are to be disregarded. Academic renewal may be applied for only once. Further information may be obtained from the Counseling Center. Click here for Academic Renewal Petition.
If you are enrolled at SBCC in Fall 2009 and are on Disqualification, you are required to submit 3 documents in order to register for Spring 2010.
