Processing Time and Decision Information
Complete Prerequisite Challenge checklist:
- Only complete Prerequisite Challenges will be processed!
- Form is complete, including all course information
- Form A: Must attach transcript(s) or verify transcript(s) have been received by SBCC
- Must attach or have transcripts on file that provide proof of completion or in-progress* registration with prerequisite and/or corequisite course(s)

- Must attach or have transcripts on file that provide proof of completion or in-progress* registration with prerequisite and/or corequisite course(s)
- Form B: Form has attached reasoning or supporting documents
- If you do not attach a reason or supporting documents, your challenge will not be processed
- Form A: Must attach transcript(s) or verify transcript(s) have been received by SBCC
Processing Time:
FALL AND SPRING: during Registration:- Once your Prerequisite Challenge Form is received by the Transcript Evaluation Office, usually within 48 hours (subject to change)*, you will receive an email notification regarding the status of your challenge via your SBCC pipeline email
- If your challenge is complete, you will be temporarily cleared to enroll in your desired course(s), FALL AND SPRING REGISTRATION ONLY
- You will receive notification of your temporary challenge status via your SBCC pipeline email
- Prerequisite Challenges will be processed or responded to within 10 business days, (subject to change)*, excluding holidays and weekends
- The ten day clock begins once you receive an email from The Transcript Evaluation Office (prerequisites@sbcc.edu) regarding your Prerequisite Challenge
* PLEASE NOTE: Due to high volume of Prerequisite Challenges, clearance deadlines and timelines are subject to change to accommodate increasing demand
SUMMER ONLY:
Temporary clearance will not be given for any Summer Prerequisite Challenges
- Challenge Form A:
- All external prerequisite coursework must be completed before challenging course
- Must attach transcript(s) or verify transcript(s) have been received by SBCC (official or unofficial)
- Transcripts on file with SBCC must provide proof of completion with ALL prerequisite and/or corequisite coursework
- CLICK HERE to verify that your transcript(s) have been received by SBCC Admissions & Records
ALL EXTERNAL COURSEWORK (INCLUDING HIGH SCHOOL CLASSES) MUST BE COMPLETED BEFORE CHALLENGING PREREQUISITE and/ or COREQUISITES, NO EXCEPTIONS!
- Challenge Form B:
- Temporary clearance will not be given for any Summer Prerequisite Challenges
- Only approved challenges will be cleared to register in desired class Challenge decisions are made at the discretion by the department chairs offering the course
- The Transcript Evaluation Office will NOT accept Prerequisite Challenge Form B's in lieu of final transcripts for Summer terms
Students will not be allowed to temporarily enroll in any summer classes until the
prerequisite and/or corequisite coursework is COMPLETED.
Decision Information:
- ALL notifications and DECISIONS are emailed to students via their SBCC PIPELINE Email account
- An approved petition does not guarantee space in any course
- An add code from an instructor does not exempt you from the deadline or the Prerequisite Challenge process
- External course work is only evaluated and applied toward Santa Barbara City College subject and/or unit credit and/or for satisfaction of prerequisites, not for transfer purposes. Other institutions are not obligated to accept SBCC subject or unit evaluations of external coursework
- If your challenge is approved you will not receive an additional email.
- If you have registered for the course, you remain registered in the class
- If you have not registered; the clearance is visible on your student profile
- If you were given temporary clearance for your Prerequisite Challenge and it is denied, an email notification is sent via SBCC pipeline email
- If the challenge is denied and you have enrolled in the class, you will be dropped
and will need to request a refund
- Once your Prerequisite Challenge Form is processed, you will receive notification of your challenge status via your SBCC pipeline email
- Challenges are processed in the order received, excluding holidays and weekends.
Important Notes:
- All Prerequisite Challenge Forms are processed in the order they are received
- Prerequisite Challenges will be processed or responded to within 10 business days, subject to REVIEW DEADLINE; excluding holidays and weekends
- Prerequisite clearance is NOT IMMEDIATE. Students are not permitted to enroll in courses requiring prerequisites or corequisites until their challenge has been approved or temporarily approved. In order to ensure priority registration, it is essential to plan accordingly
- The ten day clock begins once you receive an email from prerequisites@sbcc.edu regarding your Prerequisite Challenge, depending on REVIEW DEADLINE CALENDAR
- Students who file a challenge ten business days prior to the first day of the semester are permitted to temporarily enroll for the class, pending the outcome of the challenge, see REVIEW DEADLINE
- Students who file less than ten business days prior to the first day of the semester are not permitted to pre-enroll in the course until a petition decision has been made, see REVIEW DEADLINE
- Once your Prerequisite Challenge Form is received you will be temporarily cleared
(EXCLUDING SUMMER TERMS) to enroll in your desired course(s) and receive email notification
via your SBCC pipeline email
- The Transcript Evaluation Office encourages students to continually check their registration status
- The Transcript Evaluation Office has the right to request further information from the student and has the right to deny any challenge based on the above information
- The Transcript Evaluation Office has the right drop student from course(s) if they have not met the prerequisite and/or corequisite requirements
