Branch Topic

Beginning with Genesis, men and women have reached out to nature for answers to life's hard questions:
  • Who am I?
  • What is my place in the world?
  • Does my life have meaning and purpose?

Select one Great Books author, consider the role that nature plays in the classical writings of Western Civilization and World Culture.

  • What is our relationship to the natural world?
  • Is nature our adversary?
  • Or, is nature a world apart from where we seek solace and renewal?
  • Is it possible to – as Crosby, Stills, Nash, and Young sing – "get ourselves back to the garden"?

Selections may include any work from the Core Authors List, located under the "Authors" tab. Poets, Playwrights, Philosophers. Novelists and Naturalists.
