U.N. Day: Cool Solutions to Global Warming

Plan on joining us on Saturday morning, Nov. 7 for a special U.N. Day 2009 presentation, "Cool Solutions to Global Warming"

The U.N. considers Climate Change to be one of the biggest threats to mankind and the planet. Climatic variations combined with human actions are causing widespread desertification, affecting one-third of the Earth's surface and more than 1 billion people (and that number is growing every day). This program is intended to present the challenges before us as well as viable solutions to combat this potential catastrophe. Concern for climate change was demonstrated at the 2007 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen in which participating countries agreed to shape an ambitious and effective international response. In December 2009, Delegates from 182 countries will meet in Bonn to discuss, for the first time, key negotiating texts which can serve as the basis for an ambitious and effective international climate change deal to be clinched.

Our Keynote speaker is Anne Kelly who has worked with Al Gore since 2007 on his Climate Change Project team. She has been a key player in delivering his Inconvenient Truth presentation to communities on the East Coast. Anne comes to us from Boston, where she is currently the Director of Corporate Governance and Climate Policy at CERES. Our panelists include Adam Green and Lauren Selman. Adam is the Environmental Studies Program Coordinator and Director for the Center for Sustainability at SBCC. He is an ecologist by training, with bachelor's degrees in chemistry and wildlife biology from the University of California-Davis, and graduate degrees in wildlife ecology from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. Lauren Selman, a producer and environmental consultant, has been actively involved in the arts and the environment for more than a decade. After graduating from the University of California, Berkeley with honors in Conservation Resource Management and Theater Performance studies, Lauren founded Reel Green Media.

This event is being presented by the United Nations Association, Santa Barbara and Tri-County Chapter, and its coalition of sister non-profit organizations. It is part of SBCC's Continuing Education Program and will be held Saturday, November 7, 2009 from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. at the Fe Bland Auditorium at SBCC West Campus. Admission is Free.
